Motorhome for Nomads

I just bought a motorhome this past week. What is an envirnmentalist like me doing with an RV? the 4500 USD i spent on it is my real estate investment as a place to live. A toyota Motorhome with a 2 liter 4 Cylinder motor gets better mileage than the big motorhomes you see out there, or all those inexpensive to buy but gas guzzling 8 cylinder camper vans on the market. Now with a remodel and some mechanical work, I will have a living space with full bathroom, kitchen, hot water, heat and all the comforts of home, no mater where I am. beats the 450000+ pricetag of the cheapest house in Seatte!!

Those toyotas are indestructible! I have a friend who has been living in an early 80's model for years. He still puts several thousand miles a year on it. The motorhome itself is getting pretty crusty though,he was never one to clean up a mess. I just returned home to tennessee after doing about 6000 miles hauling a 26ft trailer with my chevy diesel pickup. The average mileage i got was 13.8 mpg @ 65mph. Gas engines towing the same are lucky to get 8mpg. Its pitifull that the 4cyl turbo diesels found in toyota, nissan pickups are not available here in the u.s. I bet i know what u.s. corps keep these out of the u.s. market! Good luck with your motorhome. Kim

      Hey Sierra
I just found a little Gem on Craig's List! It's a 1976 Toyota Chinook Motorhome!
20-R 4 cylinder Motor with a five speed stick, 17 foot length one piece all fiberglass Body with a canvas pop-top similar to the VW "Westfalia" Units.good glass all around
No Rot or dents, vinyl bucket seats and good canvas. It runs and drives GREAT! Tight and mechanically sound, and Nothing "leaks"!Has a new battery, radiator and alternator belt.
The interior of course is VERY old(the rig is 31 yrs old) It has a Propane tank, fresh and grey water holding tanks(this little rig has no toilet) a double sofa bed that slides out with a small upper berth(for a child?) It basically sleeps two adults, a 2 burner stove ,a propane furnace and a sink and a few cabinets for storage. I plan to remodel the entire interior,The guy I bought it from is putting in a new Ignition switch (It currently runs when "hotwired") and I will pick it up this coming Tuesday...the price? four hundred dollars! I was told from other's who own these that, becuase this little rig is so lightweight and has "No frills"(like AC) it will get 20mpg +! Most Motorhomes(the bigger rigs) get 8-10 mpg.
As other Tribe Members have said,Toyota's Mini Pickups are some of the longest "lasting" trucks ever made! I will post Pics and update them as I remodel the rig's Interior. Does this make me a "Queer Nomad"? All ive done so far is "rough-camping" in tents before I got this Rig!

Sweet deal, Sierra! I lived in a Toyota Dolphin rv when I was living on the road/working the Ren Faire circuit. I crashed my first one, which was Toyota Granville, but this Dolphin got me home, and through a few more shows here in my area. I liked that it got way better mileage, too. And I adjusted to the fact that it was just gonna take a while to get up any hills at all... It got there eventually.
So moved was I when I got the first one, to realize I'd bought my first house, and that it had wheels! I got all sobby on the way home. The folks I bought it from would not take any money, though it was estimated at several thousand$$$. They'd put a few dents and dings in it, and felt they couldn't take any $$$ for that. It was a beautiful gift, as I hope yours will be to you. May you roam free for years to come!
